skitter pop
I spent the summer after graduating high school working in the the sporting goods department of the local K-mart. I had been working in the fast food (deep fried) industry prior to getting the job, but had grown tired of smelling like Crisco and tater tots. Not to mention my friends insisting I bring tots and ketchup to all our summer night bonfires. Yum, tot on stick. I don't remember how I ended up in sporting goods, where my primary task was to issue fishing licenses and direct the newly licensed to the fishing lures in aisle six.  Mind you, I had never actually fished. I had, however, been present while others waited days for a bite at the end of a fishing rod and talked endlessly about bait and lures. The hat, I like. The wait. Not so much. Anyway... back to aisle six.  I could issue a license with ease, all you need is a name and a date (I had, after-all just graduated HS) The lure part. A different story. SO many lures..... all with a different name, color, and purpose. The first time I was asked where one could find the "skitter pop" lure I tilted my head and squinted my eyes as though this action would somehow unlock some hidden knowledge I had of this "skitter pop". Yeah... that didn't happen. So, I just raised my arm and pointed to aisle six.  "We're gonna have fried catfish tonight" he exclaimed. With tater tots..no doubt.

Me and my fishin' hat are off to not sit and wait for a bite, but to go out and get a bite. Tots anyone?

I love knowledge Fridays

A is for Aspirin and ASS. It's beginning to feel a lot like the 1950's for women these days. Case in point, Foster Friess. He's the primary supporter of a pro-Santorum super political action committee. He  suggested on MSNBC that women use Bayer aspirin as a contraceptive.  Wow.  “This contraceptive thing, my gosh, it’s so expensive,” he told host Andrea Mitchell . “Back in my days, they used Bayer aspirin for contraceptives. The gals put it between their knees and it wasn’t that costly.” In case your not completely clear on Satorum's view on contraception: Santorum has said that he is "not a believer in birth control" and believes it is "harmful" to both women and society.  And in October, Santorum discussed the "dangers" of contraception with an evangelical blog. "Many in the Christian faith have said, 'Well, that's okay. Contraception's okay," he said. "It...

On any given day

I wake up with one face. Fall asleep with another. I love faces. I always have. Most of the art in my home is a face of some sort.  Abstract, pop, outsider, or straight up real - I find them easy to live with and good company.     How about you?     A poem by Rainer Maria Rilke   Buddha In Glory     Center of all centers, core of cores, almond self-enclosed, and growing sweet-- all this universe, to the furthest stars all beyond them, is your flesh, your fruit. Now you feel how nothing clings to you; your vast shell reaches into endless space, and there the rich, thick fluids rise and flow. Illuminated in your infinite peace, a billion stars go spinning through the night, blazing high above your head...
