perfectly imperfect

perfect : being entirely without fault or defect corresponding to an ideal standard or abstract concept  imperfect : not perfect  subjective : Proceeding from or taking place in a person's mind rather than the external world: a subjective decision.   Particular to a given person; personal: subjective experience.  * Many years ago I bought a prefect painting of fruit,  not one blemish on the pears, blackberries or grapes. I saved for months to purchase it. It came into my home and stayed only a few weeks.... 'Cause every time I looked at it, perfection bounced back and hit me right between my substantial (better to hear you with) ears. Turns out, I can't live with perfection. I prefer things just a little off - it can be in color or scale or just the unexpected.  Not the whole room, mind you, but I must have something to look at that reflects me. Perfectly Imperfect. Perfection, like beauty is subjective (thank...

i enjoy being a girl

*Flower Drum Song:  was the eighth stage musical by the team of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II .  Leading showgirl , Linda Low sings "I Enjoy Being A Girl" *ERA: Equal Rights Amendment was written in 1923 by Alice Paul, suffragist leader and founder of the National Woman's Party. *NOW: National Organization Of Woman   founded in 1966, NOW's goal has been to take action to bring about equality for all women.  I enjoy being a girl. So why can't I wear my heels and get paid the same as the guy in loafers? Currently, women are paid 77 cents on the dollar compared to men. Women workers have been making between 70 and 80 percent of male salaries for  the last two decades . The Equal Rights Amendment was written in 1923 by Alice Paul, suffragist leader and founder of the National Woman's Party. She and the NWP considered the ERA to be the next necessary step after the 19th Amendment   in ...

I go to an indoor market in winter, but your still find yourself inside with no fresh air. I must tell you, living in Chicago-land the winters are long and spring is just a continuation of the same - only less snow.  Needless to say - we all get a little stir crazy. On one of my trips to the flea in January -  I spotted a great booth with wonderful coats, handbags, lamps, furniture... seriously, this space had the whole sch-bang! I'm dee...

Mothers...the story of linda lou and myrt

Cindy and I were best friends growing up in a small town in Virginia.  Our mothers were best friends too. I asked Cindy to share a story about our adventures and I added one of my own. Our moms were ahead of their time and sadly left us too soon.  This post is in honor of our moms and all you Mamas out there for a job well done. Linda Lou, my mom.  She had six daughters and one husband. She had a fantastic sense of humor and a no BS attitude. She had great style and walked in a pair heels like she was born in them. When life knocks you down, pick yourself up and keep moving forward. This mindset is what my mom instilled in me and my sisters. We miss her everyday. But, she left us in capable hands: Our Own.   Myrt, Cindy's Mom.  She had two daughters and one son. She was also a single Mom, a rare circumstance for the time. She had a fabulous sense of humor - was a spiritual person with the most calming voice and a...

"Bernice.....it's about your snout..."

I loved  the show 'Designing Women'  from the get go. Four smart, funny, sarcastic women who run their own interior design company (Sugarbakers). What's not to love? So many of the episodes are classic, but  the episode where Bernice gets a nose job tops my list.  Here's how it shook out.  Bernice surprises everyone at Sugarbakers with the news she is having plastic surgery to make herself look younger. After seeing a computerized reconstruction of her face, she insists on taking a loan against her life insurance policy to pay for the operation. However, when the surgeon makes her nose look like a pig's, everyone is afraid of telling Bernice the truth. JULIA: I want you to bring her back here afterwards for a drink, and all of us will sit down and gently as possible just be honest with her. SUZANNE:   Oh, that outta be easy. We'll just get her liquored up real good and say "Bernice......it's about your snout...."...

a different kind of pop art

* dad , daddy , pa , papa, pop *my pop is the father of six girls and a self taught artist. One of my first memories of his art is a mural he did in charcoal on a large red wall in our living room. It was a stagecoach with horses, it seemed to jump off the wall into the room.  I loved it. He also created  a barn 'look' on the second floor landing of our house. Complete with split rail fencing used for the stair rail - the only thing between us and certain death was termite ridden timber. But, it looked fabulous! Our house had only one bathroom and with seven females in the house including my Mom, you can imagine how my Dad felt the need to make his mark (so to speak) in the one room he really had no control over. T hus, began our summer spent retrieving rocks from the river; for what would become the most famous bathroom in town. It was a good size room with a long wall of mirrors, a claw foot tub, the essential toilet and a window.  Pop's idea was t...
